Went out last night to The Court, a gay club with some friends. There was a drag show going on when we got there. It was a lot of fun, and a very interesting new experience for me.
After it shut down around 2, we headed to The Paramount, the biggest club. It stays open much later than basically everywhere else. It was a blast. They had my fave beer on tap, and there was a rocking cover band playing.
Here’s the thing about going out in Australia - There is this one area called Northbridge where all the big clubs are. Most of these clubs have multiple levels, rooms, etc. There’s usually an open-air bar/dance area. Because Perth gets 300 days of sunshine a year, or something insane like that, a lot of places are very open-air centered. For example, the Court has a regular club area inside but it’s outside area is about twice the size of the inside. It’s the place to be. Anyway, continuing with my point. Every club has multiple rooms with different DJs, kinda similar to the US. However, most clubs also have a stage area with an awesome cover band playing. The music is a pretty good mix usually of classic rock, 80s rock, stuff from the 90s that you’ve forgotten about but remember when they start playing, Bon Jovi and fairly new stuff. The band last night was three guys and two girls. The guys played guitar, bass and drums and sang while the girls were there mostly for eye candy but they sang too. It’s kinda weird to see a young, cute blonde in a mini-skirt onstage belting out “Sex On Fire”. Even weirder is to see the other one launch into “Self-Esteem”, complete with the “la la las” at the beginning.
It was an awesome time, and in Australia, they turn it up to 11. Seriously. I couldn’t sleep last night because my ears were ringing too loud. The sad thing is that the club really started to disperse around 4. Not empty, but you could tell the general crowd was leaving. I wanted to stay longer.
Arguably the best part about going out to Northbridge is that it’s the only place in Australia where you can get food at 4 in the morning. Where there isn’t a club, there’s a kebab shop. Those guys really know their target market. Drunk people at 3 in the morning need to eat something. They also get a little boost from the clubs too. At Paramount, if you’re too drunk to get in, they say go across the street to the kebab shop, eat something and then come back and we’ll let you in. Maddy and I split some chips before we caught a cab home. They were delicious. We had a great conversation about our relationships amidst the roar of drunk people exiting the clubs.
Awesome night.
